Symptoms
Litter-Robot 3: Yellow light flashing slowly (once per second).
Litter-Robot 4: Light bar is mostly blue with a yellow/orange section.
Why does this happen?
The "Bonnet Removed" error means the robot cannot detect the bonnet (the top cover). This usually happens because:
- The bonnet is not seated correctly.
- The metal sensor tabs on the bonnet or base are dirty.
- The tabs are bent and not making contact.
- The night light connection is lost (on LR3, power flows through the bonnet for the night light).
Step 1: Check Seat & Tabs
The simplest fix is often just reseating the bonnet.
- Remove the bonnet: Press the release buttons on both sides and lift it off.
- Inspect the tabs: on the left-rear side of the base and the corresponding tabs on the bonnet.
- Clean the tabs: Wipe them with a clean, dry cloth or use a little rubbing alcohol to remove dust/corrosion.
- Reseat the bonnet: Place it back on, inserting the rear tab into the slot first, then snapping the side tabs down.
- Listen for the click: Ensure both side tabs snap audibly into place.
Step 2: Adjust Metal Contacts (LR3)
On the Litter-Robot 3, the metal tabs on the bonnet can get pushed flat over time, losing contact with the base.
- Remove the bonnet.
- Locate the two curved metal tabs on the left side of the bonnet (inside).
- Gently bend them outward slightly to ensure they press firmly against the base contacts when installed.
- Reinstall the bonnet and check if the yellow light stops flashing.
Step 3: Vacuum Sensors (LR4)
Litter-Robot 4 uses sensors in the bezel to detect the bonnet.
- Remove the bonnet.
- Vacuum the sensor holes on the top rim of the base (where the bonnet sits).
- Wipe the top rim of the base with a microfiber cloth.
- Reinstall the bonnet.
Step 4: Hard Reset
If cleaning and reseating doesn't work, perform a hard reset to clear the logic board memory.
- Unplug the power supply from the wall while the unit is powered ON.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Allow it to complete the startup cycle.
Still having issues?
If the bonnet error persists, you may need a replacement bonnet or base contact kit from Whisker. However, sometimes it's just a stubborn sensor that needs multiple cleanings.
