How the Drawer Full Sensor Works
Litter-Robot 3
Uses an optical/infrared sensor in the waste port to detect when waste reaches a certain level. The sensor beam is interrupted by waste buildup.
Litter-Robot 4
Uses laser-based detection for more precise drawer level monitoring. The app also shows the drawer fill percentage in real-time.
Common Waste Drawer Issues
1. False "Drawer Full" Alerts
The most frustrating issue is when the unit shows drawer full but the bag is barely used.
Common causes:
- Bag not seated properly in the drawer
- Wrong size bag causing sensor obstruction
- Sensor needs cleaning or reset
- Drawer not fully inserted
How to fix:
- Remove the drawer completely
- Remove and replace the bag, ensuring it sits flat on the bottom
- Fold excess bag material outside the drawer (not inside)
- Reinsert the drawer firmly until you hear it click
- Press the Reset button on the control panel
2. Indicator Won't Reset After Emptying
Sometimes the "drawer full" indicator stays on even after you've emptied and reset.
How to fix:
- Remove and reinsert the drawer several times to ensure proper seating
- Check the contact points on the drawer and base for debris
- Wipe contact points with a dry cloth
- Power cycle the unit: Unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in
- Press Reset after the unit completes its startup cycle
3. Drawer Full Light Flashing
A flashing blue light (on LR4) typically means the waste drawer needs attention.
Steps to resolve:
- Empty the waste drawer even if it doesn't look full
- Check that the carbon filter is properly installed
- Ensure the filter cover is snapped into place
- Press the Reset button
Proper Bag Placement
Incorrect bag placement causes most drawer sensor issues. Follow these tips:
- Use the right size: 9-11 gallon bags work best for most models
- Don't use scented bags: Some cats avoid the litter box if the bag has a strong scent
- Lay flat: The bag should sit flat on the drawer bottom
- Fold the excess: Fold bag handles over the outside of the drawer, not inside
- Don't overfill: Even if the bag has room, overfilling can trigger the sensor
Resetting the Drawer Sensor
For Litter Robot 3:
- With the drawer in place, press and hold the Reset button for 5 seconds
- The light should flash, indicating the sensor has been reset
For Litter Robot 4:
- Open the Whisker app
- Select your Litter Robot
- Tap "Reset Drawer" or use the Reset button on the unit
