Litter Robot Not Cycling? Here's How to Fix It

The most common Litter Robot issue is when it stops cycling. Here are the quick fixes that solve 90% of cases.

Quick Fixes to Try First

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, try these quick fixes that resolve most cycling issues:

  1. Power cycle the unit - Unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in
  2. Press the Reset button - Located on the control panel
  3. Check the waste drawer - Make sure it's not full and properly seated

1. Full Waste Drawer

The most common reason your Litter Robot won't cycle is a full waste drawer. When the drawer reaches capacity, the unit automatically stops cycling to prevent overflow.

How to fix:

  • Remove and empty the waste drawer
  • Replace the bag and reinsert the drawer firmly
  • Press the Reset button on the control panel
  • The unit should now cycle normally

2. Sleep Mode Active

If you see a purple or blue light, your Litter Robot may be in Sleep Mode. In this mode, the unit won't cycle for 8 hours to avoid disturbing you at night.

How to fix:

  • Press and hold the Cycle button for 3 seconds
  • This will disable Sleep Mode
  • The unit will return to normal operation

3. Excess Weight or High Litter Level

The Litter Robot uses weight sensors to detect when a cat enters. If the litter level is too high or there's excess weight on the unit, it may think a cat is always present.

How to fix:

  • Check that litter is below the MAX fill line inside the globe
  • Remove any items resting on the unit
  • Reset the weight scale: Press the Reset button twice from the Home position
  • If stuck mid-cycle, hold the Reset button for 3 seconds

4. Unit Not on Level Surface

The Litter Robot requires a level, stable surface to operate correctly. Uneven placement can trigger safety sensors.

How to fix:

  • Ensure the unit is on a hard, level floor
  • Don't place on carpet, litter mats, or uneven surfaces
  • Make sure no power cords are under the base
  • Keep the unit away from walls (at least 2 inches clearance)

5. Cat Sensor Needs Cleaning

Dust and litter can accumulate on the cat sensor, causing false readings that prevent cycling.

How to fix:

  • Wipe the bezel sensor area with a dry, lint-free cloth
  • Use a vacuum to remove any debris from sensor holes
  • Press the Reset button after cleaning
