Symptoms
Litter-Robot 3: Red light flashing rapidly. The globe stops mid-rotation.
Litter-Robot 4: Red/orange light bar. Error message "Pinch Detect" in the app.
What is Pinch Detect?
The Pinch Detect safety feature stops the globe from rotating when it senses resistance or an obstruction. This is designed to protect your cat from being caught during a cycle. While it's an important safety feature, it can be triggered by non-dangerous conditions like:
- Too much litter in the globe (overfilled).
- Clumped litter stuck to the globe liner or screen.
- A litter mat or debris caught in the gap between the globe and base.
- The waste drawer is too full, preventing litter from sifting properly.
- The globe liner or pocket is misaligned.
Step 1: Check for Obstructions
The most common cause is something physically blocking the globe.
- Power off the unit and unplug it for safety.
- Inspect the gap between the globe and the base. Look for litter clumps, debris, toys, or anything wedged in the space.
- Check the waste drawer: Remove it and ensure it isn't overflowing. A full drawer prevents the screen from sifting properly and adds resistance.
- Rotate the globe manually: With the unit unplugged, gently rotate the globe by hand. It should turn smoothly. If you feel resistance, locate and remove the obstruction.
Step 2: Check Litter Level
Too much or too little litter can trigger pinch detect.
- Check the fill line: The litter should be at or just below the raised fill line inside the globe.
- Remove excess litter: If overfilled, scoop out litter until it reaches the proper level.
- Add litter if low: Too little litter can cause clumps to stick to the screen, creating resistance.
Step 3: Clean the Globe & Screen
Litter buildup on the rubber screen or globe walls can create enough resistance to trigger pinch detect.
- Remove the bonnet and empty all litter from the globe.
- Inspect the rubber screen: Check for clumps stuck to or dried onto the screen.
- Clean the screen: Use a damp cloth or pet-safe wipes to remove buildup. For stubborn deposits, soak with warm water.
- Check the globe liner: Ensure the pocket liner is properly seated and not bunched up.
- Refill with fresh litter to the fill line.
Step 4: Check the Anti-Pinch Strips (LR4)
The Litter-Robot 4 has anti-pinch safety strips around the opening. If these are dirty or damaged, they can falsely trigger the pinch detect error.
- Locate the rubber strips around the globe opening on the base.
- Clean them with a damp cloth to remove litter dust and buildup.
- Inspect for damage: If a strip is torn or peeling, contact Whisker support for a replacement.
Step 5: Hard Reset
If cleaning doesn't resolve the error, a hard reset can clear the sensor state.
- Unplug the power supply from the wall while the unit is powered ON.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Allow it to complete the startup cycle.
Still having issues?
If pinch detect keeps recurring, it may indicate a worn rubber screen, a motor issue, or a sensor problem. Try using a different type of litter (sometimes clumping formulas create more resistance). If the problem persists, contact Whisker support for further diagnosis.
